Detective Sergeant Steve Brown, of the Portland police crime investigation unit, said the safe looked like it had been opened with a can opener.

He said the business premises of Bluescope Distributions on the Portland-Nelson Road was broken into between11am Monday and 4.15pm yesterday after a toilet window was removed.

“The office office was ransacked and damaged caused to computer screens and air conditioning units,” he said.

“A safe was removed from a storage room, dragged into the office and the thieves have used some sort of tool to force open the safe. We believe that an as yet unknown quantity of cash was then stolen from the safe. Damage to the safe was substantial – the safe looked like it had been opened by a can opener.”

Detective Sergeant Brown said neighbouring truck yard was also burgled overnight Monday with a prime mover stolen and crashed.

He said thieves had entered the yard of K J Pty Ltd on the Portland-Nelson Road between 8pm Monday and when the damage was reported to police at 7.30am Tuesday.

“Items have been stolen from a prime mover including a hard hat, hatchet binders and a fire extinguisher,” he said.

“They then got into a Kenworth prime mover and driven it around before crashing into a side fence and getting bogged. The thieves have then fled. The driver’s side window, rear cabin window and the windscreen were smashed.”

That followed a brazen car theft in Portland’s main street on Monday morning.

The 1989 blue Ford Telstar sedan was found along the Portland-Nelson Road Tuesday morning.

Detective Sergeant Brown said damage to the vehicle included a burnt out clutch, the boot had been forced opened and there was a dent to a panel.

“The car was stolen between 9.30am and 10am on Monday morning when a lady parked in Percy Street and went into a shop. When she returned her sedan was gone,” he said.

Anyone with information about any of the offences is requested to contact the Portland police station or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
